HEADLINES is a pioneering South African social creative enterprise based in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal. We bring together creative design, sustainability, skills development and cultural heritage to create products that deliver both economic and social value.
Founded by acclaimed fashion designer and social entrepreneur Lungi Sokhulu, HEADLINES was created from a vision of building a business that serves humanity while remaining commercially sustainable.
Our unique approach transforms recycled newspapers, textile offcuts, discarded fabrics and other reclaimed materials into beautiful, functional and marketable products. From fashion accessories and bespoke garments to interior décor and corporate gifts, every HEADLINES creation represents a journey of transformation.
HEADLINES emerged from Lungi Sokhulu’s passion for fashion, community development and environmental conservation.
Growing up in rural KwaZulu-Natal, Lungi recognised both the abundance of creative talent within local communities and the growing environmental challenges created by waste. Inspired by traditional Zulu weaving practices and indigenous knowledge, she developed innovative techniques for transforming recycled newspapers into fashionable and functional products.
This vision grew into HEADLINES—a social creative enterprise that combines manufacturing, skills development, environmental advocacy and cultural preservation.
Today, HEADLINES continues to demonstrate how creativity and entrepreneurship can become powerful tools for positive social transformation.
Our philosophy is built on three interconnected pillars.
People are at the heart of HEADLINES.
We create opportunities for individuals who are often excluded from mainstream economic participation, including women from disadvantaged communities, unemployed youth, persons with disabilities, rural communities and informal workers.
Through practical training in manufacturing, textile construction, weaving, product finishing, quality control, entrepreneurship and business management, we help people turn creativity into opportunity.
We believe that waste can become a valuable resource.
Our circular approach gives discarded materials a second life through recycling and upcycling. We work with recycled newspapers, textile offcuts, discarded fabrics and reclaimed materials to create products while helping reduce waste and promote responsible consumption.
Our work connects environmental responsibility with economic opportunity.
Profit enables sustainability and growth, but it is not our sole purpose.
At HEADLINES, we believe financial sustainability should support greater social impact, environmental conservation, skills development and opportunities for vulnerable communities.
Our philosophy is rooted in the belief that wealth creation carries a responsibility to contribute positively to society.
Lungi Sokhulu is a South African fashion designer, social entrepreneur, innovator, skills development practitioner and environmental advocate.
Her work combines contemporary fashion with traditional African craftsmanship and sustainable production. Through HEADLINES, she has created a platform focused on skills development, employment creation, environmental conservation, women empowerment and cultural preservation.
Her leadership is guided by the belief that people should be valued not only for formal qualifications, but also for their potential, creativity and willingness to learn.
By 2030, HEADLINES aims to become a globally recognised African social creative enterprise that demonstrates how business can simultaneously create employment, preserve cultural heritage, protect the environment and generate sustainable economic value.
We aspire to inspire a new generation of entrepreneurs who understand that commercial success and meaningful social impact can coexist.
African indigenous knowledge is an important part of the HEADLINES identity.
Traditional Zulu craftsmanship has long used techniques such as weaving, plaiting, coiling, stitching and decorative finishing. HEADLINES adapts these principles to modern materials and contemporary product design.
By combining traditional craftsmanship with recycled newspapers and textile materials, we create products that honour the past while opening new possibilities for the future.
Our approach ensures that cultural knowledge is not only preserved, but also adapted and transferred to younger generations.
HEADLINES is more than a manufacturing business. We are committed to creating meaningful social and economic impact.
